Where to Live

Where you choose to live can have a major impact on your experience in Uruguay. The country is generally safe and stable compared with many regional alternatives. But lifestyle, cost, transportation, and expat support vary by location. Most Americans should focus on established areas with good services and healthcare.

Montevideo. Uruguay’s capital. Montevideo is the best choice for the best healthcare and services. Popular neighborhoods include Pocitos, Punta Carretas, and Carrasco. These provide access to the Rambla, parks, cafés, and modern conveniences.

Punta del Este. Uruguay’s best-known beach destination. Punta del Este has beaches, restaurants, shopping, high-rise apartments, and an international feel. It appeals to those who want coastal living with strong amenities. But costs are higher and the area is much busier during the summer season.

Piriápolis. A quieter and more relaxed coastal town. Piriápolis provides access to beaches, restaurants, and basic services. It appeals to expats who want seaside living without the crowds or prices found in resort areas.

Colonia del Sacramento. A historic riverside city known for its colonial architecture. Colonia del Sacramento offers a slower pace and ferry connection to Buenos Aires. It appeals to those who want charm and a smaller-city lifestyle with easy access to Argentina.

Atlántida / Ciudad de la Costa. Located east of Montevideo. This coastal area has a more suburban lifestyle with beach access. It appeals to those who want more space with access to Montevideo.

Best Residency Pathways

Foreigners are eligible to apply for permanent residency without establishing temporary residency first. For those who want to stay in the country long term and have enough income, this may be a good option. For shorter stays, the digital nomad permit is a good option.
